As someone who has long felt that the "punctuated equilibrium" model of Darwinian evolution seems quite valid at this point, I found this research result very exciting. This reminds me of the findings that the energy-processing mitochondria in our cells literally seem to be primeval bacteria being incorporated into very early cells as plants/animals/protea evolved billions of years ago in the history of life. This cross-genome evolution notion is fascinating to me.
